A quiz that appeared on MSN 6/26/00 asked
What's the most beguiling opener for your personal ad?
The answer given was:
Answer: Five points for "Gorgeous (with subdued
back-lighting) ... ." That's according to Sharyn Wolf's author of Guerrilla Dating
Tactics, who has made a career of studying what works and what doesn't in personal
ads. Initials ("SWCWNRNMNS"), she says, are just plain confusing and look cheap,
besides. Nobody's going to believe you look like Gwyneth Paltrow. "Petite, pretty,
feminine" is as generic as it gets. Is anybody looking for an unclean,
dishonest, uncaring, insincere, cold SWM? And starting off "I promised I'd never do
this, but ..." makes you sound sad and discouraged. What you want to aim for, says
Wolf, is "heart, soul and wit ... passion, compassion, empathy and a hint of
mischief."
I would add to that, that humor in a personal ad attracts
me. Also sometimes when I see Looking for clean, honest,
caring, sincere, warm SWM I think, "Is she saying that it's so hard to find one, and
I'll bet she did find them and rejected them because she's really looking for a man with
money, the hippocrite."
